GHB (Gamma hydroxybutyrate)
What is GHB?
Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a synthetic drug. Colourless liquid. Salty taste but no smell. Usually sold in bottles but can be produced as tablets or powder see also (GBL)
- (GHB) is also produced as a result of fermentation and so is found in small quantities in some wines. (the amount of GHB found in wine is insignificant and not sufficient to produce any effects)
- Also known as: (NOTE: some of these products may now contain GBL) Liquid Ecstasy, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, Gamma G, Somatomax, Growth Hormone Booster, Firewater, Liquid E, Salty water, Blue nitro, Oxy-sleep, Liquid X, Natural sleep-500 , and 'G'.
- GHB has been implicated in sexual assaults in Britain and the US.
The law
- Class C drug
- Penalties for possession: maximum two years in prison and/or fine
- Penalties for possession with intent to supply: maximum 14 years in prison and/or fine.
History
- Originally used as an anaesthetic.
Effects
- Sedative, muscle relaxation, feeling of euphoria, sensual and uninhibited. Effects can last for a day
- Long term effects are unknown.
Purity
- Liquid strength varies widely from bottle to bottle.
Risks
- Sickness, stiff muscles, fits and even collapse. Can cause severe burns to the mouth
- Use can be fatel, particularly When mixed with alcohol or other drugs.
Dependence and treatment
- Possibility of psychological dependence though this is unproven
