1,4-BD (1,4-butanediol)
What is 1,4-BD?
Like (GBL), 1,4-Butanediol is an industrial solvent that, when ingested, is converted to GHB, a drug of abuse with depressant effects, primarily on the central nervous system.
- 1,4-Butanediol is used in industry as a solvent and in the manufacture of some types of plastics, resins and fibers.
- Also known as: One Comma Four, One Four Bee, One Four B-D-O. Formerly sold as dietary supplements such as: Enliven, Amino, Flex, NRG3, Serenity and Zen Dormir
- In the USA (like GHB and GBL) 1,4-Butanediol has also been implicated in drug facilitated sexual assaults
The law
- Currently (1,4-BD) is not illegal in the UK , there is potential for the classification of this drug in the near future
History
- In 1995 Japan produced 29,717 tones of 1,4-butanediol for industrial use
- After gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) became an illegal substance in the US in 1990, 1,4-butanediol became a popular substance of abuse and an alternative to (GHB)
Effects
- Effects similar to GHB
- Sedative, muscle relaxation, feeling of euphoria, sensual and uninhibited
- 1,4-Butanediol may also induce a strong toxic feeling not due to its conversion to GHB when ingested, (an effect not present with GHB)
- Long term effects are unknown.
Purity
- Little is known about (1,4-BD) 1,4-Butanediol prepared for abuse. Strength may vary widely and may contain other drugs
Risks
- Possibility of collapse and death (particularly When mixed with alcohol or other drugs)
- It thought that 1,4-butanediol abuse has been shown to cause kidney and liver damage
- Nausea, short term urinary and faecal incontinence
- Agitation
- Slight irritant to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract
Dependence and treatment
- There is some evidence of psychological dependence
